Earthquake Sensor Omron D7S – RAK12027 RAKwireless

The RAKwireless RAK12027 integrates the Omron D7S (D7S-A0001) as a compact, high-precision seismic/earthquake sensor for the WisBlock ecosystem. Beyond capturing earthquake-related data, it includes a practical alarm/shutoff output that triggers when an event reaches a seismic intensity equivalent to 5 upper or higher on the JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) Seismic Intensity Scale. This enables systems to automatically put sensitive equipment into a safer state—such as stopping processes, parking machinery, or triggering remote alerts.

For intensity judgment, the module uses the SI value, described as strongly correlated with seismic intensity scales to support higher-precision intensity evaluation. The D7S also provides collapse alerting: if the sensor’s horizontal position changes by more than 20 degrees, it raises an alert—commonly treated as an indicator that the mounted structure has shifted or potentially collapsed.

The module communicates over I2C and also supports interrupt pins for event-driven integration. With its compact form factor and battery-oriented design goals, it fits long-running monitoring nodes.

Equipment and machine monitoring: earthquake-triggered alarms and automatic shutdown signaling
