RAKwireless RAK12004 WisBlock Winsen MQ-2 Gas Sensor (Smoke, LPG, Methane)

RAKwireless RAK12004 adds practical gas and smoke detection to WisBlock projects using the MQ-2 sensor from Zhengzhou Winsen Electronics. The MQ-2 is widely used for its high sensitivity to common combustible gases and smoke, making it a strong choice when your main goal is detection and alerting rather than laboratory-grade selectivity.

The module can respond to a range of substances including LPG, butane, propane, methane, hydrogen, alcohol vapors, as well as smoke and other flammable vapors. With its I2C interface, the RAK12004 is straightforward to integrate into embedded firmware, and the built-in alert function makes it easy to implement threshold-based alarms or event triggers (e.g., “gas detected” → notify, start ventilation, or shut down equipment).

Real-world use cases include:

Leak and safety monitoring in technical rooms, garages, basements, enclosures, and containerized deployments (especially where LPG/propane may be present).

Note: MQ-2 is a broad-response sensor (multiple gases/vapors). It’s well suited for detection, trends, and alarms; if you need high selectivity between specific gases, a different sensing approach is typically required.
