LoRaWAN Gateway: Will Indoor Work—or Do You Need Outdoor?

When buying a LoRaWAN gateway, an outdoor model can look like the stronger choice. But a suitable indoor position may be closer to difficult sensor locations and simpler to install. The useful choice depends on your building, measurement points and connection—not just the enclosure.

An elevated outdoor position may reach several areas. A suitable indoor position may simplify installation and place the receiver closer to difficult measurement points. The right choice depends on the building and a test at the intended site.

This guide concerns an EU868 deployment. Use the exact manufacturer’s installation instructions alongside it; a general buying guide cannot establish radio coverage for your building.

What does a LoRaWAN gateway do?

The gateway receives LoRaWAN transmissions from sensors and forwards them to a network server. Its server connection is often called backhaul. Depending on the model and variant, this may use Ethernet or cellular connectivity.

The sensor radio link and the gateway’s internet connection are separate parts of the system. A strong radio signal cannot compensate for an unreachable server. Likewise, an online gateway does not prove that a basement sensor is being received reliably.

Check which server and connection mode the deployment will use. An embedded network server and a connection to an external server are different operating arrangements. The gateway settings need to match the intended application.

When is an indoor LoRaWAN gateway suitable?

An indoor location can be practical when power, network access and maintenance access are already available. A well-positioned receiver can be a sensible starting point for an office, workshop or part of a building.

Test the difficult measurement locations rather than only placing a sensor beside the gateway. Walls, floors, metal surfaces and antenna placement affect the path. A convenient cable route is not enough reason to place the receiver inside a closed metal cabinet.

The Kilo catalogue includes the RAK7268v2 EU868 and Milesight UG63. Check the precise variant, connections and installation conditions on each product page before choosing.

When should you choose an outdoor LoRaWAN gateway?

An outdoor position can be useful for a site with multiple buildings or a wider area to cover. A higher antenna position may reduce obstructions, but it does not guarantee coverage in every room or basement.

Plan the mounting, environmental limits, weatherproof cable connections, power, maintenance access and manufacturer-required protection. Follow the instructions for the exact model and use appropriately qualified installers where the installation requires them.

The RAK7289v2 WisGate Edge Pro is an outdoor option in the Kilo catalogue. Its manufacturer installation guide recommends completing basic configuration before the final outdoor installation, when access and server connectivity are easier to check.

LoRaWAN gateway buying checks: EU868, backhaul and accessories

For an EU868 project, the sensors, gateway and server settings must work together. Do not select hardware from its photograph or the word “LoRa” alone. Check the complete product and variant designation; a different regional radio variant is not automatically interchangeable through software settings.

Cellular connectivity can also be optional. A model family offering LTE does not mean every listed unit contains the modem you need. Check the actual configuration, service requirements and coverage at the installation point. For Ethernet, confirm the cable route and network connection. For PoE, confirm the power source and device are compatible.

Include the antenna, mounting parts, cables and required protective components in your purchasing check. Do not assume all accessories are supplied. RAKwireless identifies separately required LoRa antennas in its RAK7289v2 installation guidance; the actual shop offer remains the source for the purchased package contents.

Test LoRaWAN coverage before permanent installation

Run a prepared test at the intended gateway position. Place representative sensors at their future measurement points and check that readings reach the chosen server and application. Repeat under normal operating conditions, including the relevant doors being closed.

Record positions, times, reception indicators and missing messages. Observing several reporting intervals is more useful than confirming a single received transmission. If some locations remain unsuitable, evaluate placement changes or an additional gateway position.

An additional gateway extends the network’s receiving coverage. Do not assume it operates like a simple Wi-Fi repeater. Each part of the deployment still needs the correct server connection and configuration.

A LoRaWAN gateway buying checklist

Decision What to record
Radio region EU868 project and matching sensor/gateway variants
Installation Indoor or outdoor conditions and maintenance access
Server Supported connection mode and setup owner
Backhaul Available Ethernet or cellular connection
Power Appropriate supply or compatible PoE equipment
Accessories Antenna, mounting, cables and required protection
