The RAK5146 is an LPWAN concentrator module in a Mini PCI-e form factor that adds LoRaWAN gateway capability to routers, industrial hosts, and embedded platforms. This specific version is SPI based and includes onboard GPS (ZOE-M8Q) for precise timing, which is critical for stable gateway operation and reliable packet timestamping in real deployments.

Built around the Semtech SX1303 baseband processor, it supports multiple parallel demodulation paths so a gateway can handle many end devices at once. That makes it a practical choice for production-grade LoRaWAN infrastructure where density and reliability matter—such as smart metering fixed networks, industrial sensing, building automation, and wide-area IoT coverage.

Integration is straightforward thanks to the mini-PCIe form factor: install it into a compatible host with a free mini-PCIe slot and SPI connectivity. For faster bring-up, the manufacturer provides examples for Raspberry Pi and Linux-based hosts. Note from the manufacturer: when using the RAK2287/RAK5146 Pi HAT, select the SPI interface.
