Product Description Technical Details

The RAKwireless RAK12040 adds a compact 8×8 infrared temperature sensor to the WisBlock ecosystem using the Panasonic AMG8833. It provides a 2D temperature grid with 64 measurement points (8×8), which is useful when you need a simple thermal map rather than a single temperature value—such as detecting warm objects, monitoring zones, or triggering automations from thermal changes.

Temperature data is provided via I2C, and the module runs from a 3.3 V supply. The text mentions a ready-to-use software library and tutorial to speed up evaluation and building a temperature data acquisition setup. Mechanically, the module mounts into the sensor slot on a WisBlock Base board; using it requires a WisBlock Base plus a WisBlock Core module.

Practical use cases include:

Presence and occupancy detection: zone-based detection of people/heat sources (low resolution)

Simple motion detection: thermal changes across the grid as triggers

Device temperature monitoring: spotting hotspot trends inside enclosures or technical areas

Building automation: temperature-driven logic using simple thermal zones
